Incense insertion is a sacred ritual act, with the incense burner serving as a vessel that carries prayers and respect. However, this sacred ritual is not neutral; within religious systems, gendered power relations exist, and the female body is often subjected to control and regulation. The saying "Everyone inserts incense sticks into the Beigang incense burner" sexualizes the originally sacred incense burner by using the act of "inserting incense" as a metaphor for sexual acts, implying collective possession and violation of the female body, objectifying women as freely accessible and consumable. This conceals a deep-rooted gendered power structure. This performance work covers my body with incense ashes, turning it into a "human incense burner," inviting the audience to insert incense sticks onto my body. The misogynistic metaphor embedded in language shifts from abstract to tangible.
